Juanita Tsosie, Master Weaver: Dine’ 1930-2011. This is a large Navajo Pictorial weaving by Juanita Tsosie (b. 1930, d. 2011). The imagery depicts the Navajo Nation Fair and was completed in 1990 after nearly 18 months on the loom. It is extraordinary in size while maintaining a tight weave. She became widely known in weaving circles for her elaborate, highly detailed folk-art depictions of life on the Navajo lands.Gallery 10, a prominent native American gallery in Scottsdale, AZ, NYC, and Santa Fe, NM represented her incredible weavings for the better part of 25 years. Juanita was known for her humor, honest depictions of pastoral and social life on the reservation, excellent technique, the folk-art style and composition of her story telling. She worked in small, medium and large scale, and this piece stands as the largest of hers measuring 62” wide by 140” long.
